To a man, premature ejaculation ranks right up there with the pain of delivering a baby for a woman. The physical pain certainly does not compare, but the emotional and psychological trauma makes it just as horrid.
The question for a man can be, why can’t he last longer, how to stop premature ejaculation? The answer has to do with the underlying cause of the problem. For some men, it is simply a matter of some sort of psychological issue. Perhaps, back when he was first becoming sexually active, he learned to masturbate very quickly (out of fear of discovery by his parents). As a result, he’s now very quick in bed. A high level of serotonin is the main cause of premature ejaculation. A leading cause of high serotonin levels is anxiety, as the primitive part of the brain readies the body for action. This causes the body to produce more of this neurotransmitter chemical.
Now, where serotonin comes into play has to do with a man’s biochemistry. The tip of the penis has a large number of nerve endings in it, and thus it is very sensitive to neural stimulation. In the human body are two very effective neurotransmitters: serotonin and dopamine. The more of either or both of these chemicals in a man’s blood stream, the quicker his nervous system tends to react to stimulation. As a result, sometimes just the sight of a beautiful woman, her touch or scent, or some other trigger mechanism can result in premature ejaculation. Studies have been performed to see if a particular odor is associated with sexual arousal for a man, and it turns out that just about anything can be a trigger. One study looked at it this way: a teenage boy orders a pizza; the waitress brings it to him and bends over as she sets it on the table. In so doing, the boy gets a brief glimpse down the front of her shirt. After that, the smell of pizza can have a sexual connotation for the boy. If he has a particularly high level of serotonin in his body, a visit to a pizza parlor can be downright embarrassing!
In terms of causes of a high serotonin level, there are some antidepressant medications that boost both its level and that of dopamine. So, if a man starts to notice problems with premature ejaculation, one way to avoid premature ejaculation is to change medications. He should speak to his doctor about trying a different medicine, or perhaps altering the amount of the first medication.
As serotonin is carried in the platelets of the blood, metabolized in the liver, and excreted through the kidneys, diseases that affect these areas of the body can cause premature ejaculation. There is a type of tumor, known as characinoid, which can cause large amounts of serotonin to be released into the blood. Also, any type of disease that damages the liver can result in more serotonin remaining in the blood. If a man has kidney trouble or failure, the excess serotonin will not be flushed from his system. Some types of cancer, particularly leukemia, cause the level of platelets in a man’s blood to either be greatly reduced or abnormally highly. If the latter occurs, this can be yet another cause of premature ejaculation.
